I visited Oakridge House, Jefferson Road, Basingstoke, Hants RG21 5qs UK, which is a residential home for the elderly mentally infirm people with nearly three acres of land around the home. The home is managed by a Unit Manager who has a management team to provide a twenty four hour on call service.
Also, I visited Hampshire County Council, Nursing Homes for Older People. Day to day activities reflect what the residents want and all the residents are encouraged to have a say in the way their home is run and what happens there.
There are over 5000,000 older people in the UK living in residential homes, nursing homes or NHS long stay wards or homes. Also, I attended a meeting meant for training up the Managers in the field of computer technology in maintaining the Old age/ Nursing Home. My sponsor arranged for a meeting with the Faculty member of Dept. of Sociology for subject based discussion in the Portsmouth University, Southampton.
I lived with the family of my English sponsor for one month from 15-5-2005 to 16-2005. So, this gave me very good opportunity to have empirical knowledge about the English way of life and social institutions.

A brief Report on the Extension Work
It is widely accepted today that Teaching, Research and Extension are the three important dimensions of University education. Gandhigram Rural University as unique Rural University in India has recognized the role of extension education and started implementation of extension Programmes since its inception and visualized extension as an important component of higher education. The extension generally refers to extension of the information and knowledge to others and in the process, we gain more knowledge. In other words, the extension refers to extending services to the needy and, we become more compassionate and considerate towards the rural folk,
Community is the target for extension and village is a laboratory, where we can do all kind of exercises such as enabling the villagers to find solutions for the socio-economic problems such as Female Infanticide and Foeticide, Dowry, Child labour, Street children, Drop outs, the aged and their living and working conditions , the plight of Women and children in rural Areas, condition of old widows, Health and Sanitation, Environment and Resource Management, Labour and industry, Women and Self help groups, Technology transfer and Appropriate Technology, Low cost Housing, Drinking water, social problems. So, Extension programme aims at serving the rural community and explores the new approaches to solve their problems.
Extension Programme helps the students and teachers to understand the different problems of the rural community and relates the class room learning to the grass root level cum field realities (sandwich Programmes). Besides, the sharing of knowledge with the people and from the people, are taking place in fields and villages. Extension Programmes also provide an opportunity to identify socially relevant projects. Good rapport with people and NGOs help the student and teachers to improve the knowledge, skills, attitudes, behaviour and motivation. In short, extension Programmes bring a lot of benefits to the students and teachers, improve the understanding between different sections of the students, teachers and villages and develop the human nature and instill the hope and courage of managing social crisis and difficulties in the minds of the
Students and make them employable after completion their education career successfully.
