Simple community living and sharing available infrastructure are the basic principles of hostel life in the GRI campus.
The Gandhigram Rural Institute (Deemed to be University) has separate Hostels for both Boys and Girls and also for Working Women. The Hostels are provided with facilities for dining, entertainment, In-door games and internet browsing. The common amenities such as health centre, gym, fitness centre and cooperative stores are located close to these hostels to cater to the needs of the inmates staying in the Hostels.
Immediate health care for any physical indisposition of hostel inmates will be attended to. At the same time, parents/ guardians will be informed about the health condition. Advanced health care if needed has to be provided by the parent/guardian.
The Mess offers simple and nutritious vegetarian food and the Mess rate is calculated on dividing system. The hostel inmates are expected modesty in dress within the hostel premises.
Ragging in any manner is strictly prohibited in the hostel premises. There are anti Ragging Committee and Squad which are strictly monitoring the Campus as well as hostel premises.
The total intake capacity is 1573 all together. Students residing within the radius of 25 kms from the Institute will not generally be given admission. If vacancy arises, the request of local students will be considered on priority basis.
Each hostel is having separate Warden (in the rank of Professor/Associate Professor) Dy. Warden (in the rank of Associate/ Assistant professor) and Resident Warden (From the teaching Faculty). The Hostels have other staff like Clerks, Supervisor, Watchman, Cooks and Matrons for Ladies Hostel.
The GRI Hostel administration is entrusted with Hostel Management Committee (HMC). This enables the administration to decentralize the functioning of Hostel administration and devolve the financial resources management. The composition of HMC is the Registrar, Finance Officer, Deans of Faculty of Rural Oriented Sciences, Faculty of Rural Social Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Wardens of all Hostels and two Student representatives-one boy and one girl nominated by the Vice Chancellor every year, and Dean, Students' Welfare who is the Member and Convener of the Hostel Management Committee. The HMC headed by the Vice Chancellor is decision making body on all aspects of the GRI Hostels and it will have the power to amend the Hostel manual as and when need arises. The Dean, Students' Welfare is the Chief Warden for all GRI Hostels with office having Manager and other ministerial staff.
There is a framed rules and regulation for GRI Hostels. The rules and regulation of Hostels reveal the general discipline to be followed, strictly prohibited acts/ behaviors in the hostel premises, functions of Mess, study hour etc. Failure to observe discipline and violation of rule make a hostel inmate liable to disciplinary action which may result various minor and major punishment of expulsion from Hostel and Institute. Every student before joining the hostel must give Undertaking in writing that he/she will abide by the rules of the hostels and shall adhere to discipline enforced by the authorities. This shall be confirmed in writing by the parent/guardian also in the declaration form.

Hostel for Working Women with Day Care Centre was established at GRI with financial assistance received from the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Govt of India and UGC at a total cost of Rs.73,00,000/- and it has started functioning from 2.10.2007.
The actual intake capacity of the Hostel for Working Women is 85. The Working women in GRI and nearby Institutions and Research Scholars are being given accommodation in the Hostel. The Warden, Ladies Hostel is also functioning as Warden of Working Women's Hostel. The Working Women's Hostel has one Dy.Warden, one Matron and other sub staff.

The Soundarya Day Care Centre was established from 3rd August 2001 with partial support from the UGC is a model Child Care Centre run by the Department of Home Science of Gandhigram Rural Institute, Gandhigram. Children in the age range of one month to five years are admitted here. The centre functions from 8.45 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. on all working days of the Institute. For the proper development of the children, care, appropriate training and education are provided at this centre in a child friendly environment to enrich their home care.
