1.    1971 – 74 As Geologist, PWD Groundwater, Govt. 0f Tamil   Nadu

Carried out Groundwater Exploration in hard rock and soft rock 
 aquifers of southern Tamil Nadu involving

 

v  Geohydrological mapping & Aquifer Characteristics  studies

v  Water Quality  & Salt Water Intrusion studies  etc.,

 

 

2.    1974 – 86 As Geologist, Geological Survey of  India,  Rajasthan  &  Gujarat   (Western Region)

 

v  Carried out airphoto based geological mapping in 23,000 sq. km.  area of Vindhyan basin, Rajasthan and brought out basin evolutionary models

 

v  Prepared  first time comprehensive lineament map for entire Rajasthan & Gujarat using 1 : 1 million LANDSAT imagery  and brought out a hierarchy of base line Information on the controls of lineaments over tectonism, magmatism, metallogeny, groundwater, river migrationland – ocean interaction, seismicity, geothermics etc.

 

v  Developed  satellite  lineaments based tectonic models for Aravalli, Delhi and Vindhyan basins of Western India

 

v  On the basis of satellite and air craft based Remote sensing  data interpretation of geological structures in over 1 lakh sq.km area and intensive field mapping, developed an unique “intrabasinal stress and a rheid flow of shales model”  to explain the intense peribasinal and central idiomorphic deformations in Vindhyan Basin of Rajasthan

 

v  Demonstrated a rotational deformation model for the Deccan volcanics of Southern Sourashtra on the basis of Remote Sensing revealed fractures and explained the deformation tectonics of Deccan volcanics

 

v  Brought out the migratory melodrama of all West and North Indian rivers and developed a model on the pleistocene – tectonics of Western India.

 

v  As the investigator in ISRO – GSI collaborative project, conducted Airborne multispectral / thermal flights over the mineralized belts of  Rajasthan and optimized  the spectral ranges for lithological and metallogenic mapping

v  Evolved  a course module on Geological Remote Sensing for M.Tech Programme

 

v  Prepared lineament map of South India on 1:1 million scale  using  Indian  Remote Sensing satellite data 

 

v  Interpreted  IRS   satellite  data  and brought out newer information on the Fluvial  Geomorphology and coastal geomorphology of Tamil Nadu.

 

v  Carried out   Remote   Sensing   based  integrated studies for groundwater   targeting  in Ramanathapuram District.

4.    1989  - March 2009   As Professor  and  Head, School  of    Earth  Sciences  and  Director, Centre for Advanced Studies in Remote Sensing,  Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli.

 

                                                  i.    On Remote Sensing & GIS in Mineral and hydrocarbon habitat mapping

1.           Developed a directory showing the optimised spectral ranges for discriminating various rock types, from future satellite data through spectro radiometric measurments.

2.           Developed linear models between rock chemistry and satellite multiband data and optimised the satellite data for geochemical mapping.

3.            Brought out newer concepts on Thermal Remote Sensing in Geology through ground based kinetic temperature  surveys  in  Precambrian  rocks  of  Trichy region,

4.            Optimized the time for satellite Data acquisition for Geological mapping through round the clock day time measurements of spectral reflectance under different sun elevation and Azimuths.

5.            Developed a first time model that the Precambrian fold belts of South India were   formed only by two episodes of deformation through the interpretation of Tectonic features from IRS satellite data.

6.            Carried out tectonic studies and brought out models on the origin of domes and basins in South India.

7.            Developed GIS Models on the fracture fabric and its control over magmatism,   metallogeny,   ground water, seismicity etc. of South India.

8.            Similarly, demonstrated a new methodology to map the geo thermal targets through Remote Sensing derived geological and geomorphological parameters.

9.            Developed new methods of 3D visualization of Subsurface Geology using Geophysical data

 

                                                ii.    On Remote Sensing & GIS in modern geological processes

 

è    Developed a first time ever conceived model on the Active Tectonics of South India which has opened many newer vistas for futurw studies.

è    Developed newer    concepts   on   how   neotectonic   and   active   tectonic windows can be identified and mapped  in shield areas  using Remote Sensing and also GIS visualisations

è    Brought out newer ideas and models on the impact of active tectonics over fluvial, coastal and hydrological systems of south India.

è    Brought out the first time model on the life history of Cauvery that

v  The river Cauvery has flowed in between Hogenekkal and Chennai   during 500,000 - 3,000 years before present (B.P.)

v  Flowed via  present day Ponnaiyar during 2,700 - 2,300 years

v  Reached Pudukkottai Vellar around  2,300 years  (B.P)  and

v  Finally reached the Coleroon stage  around 750 years from now though a process of anticlockwise rotational migration

v  This study has provided Packages of newer ideas on mineral resources, water resources,   interbasin water transfer, recharge, palaeo flood cycle, Palaeo climate, past sea levels, Archaeology, Evolution of Civilisation etc.

è    Interpreted IRS satellite images of Tamil Nadu coast and developed  models  and newer  information on

v  Land - ocean interactive  processes 

v  Past sea level curves from geomorphological data

v  Comprehensive picture on coastal hazards.

è    Brought out varied models on such modern Geological processes and their control over riverine, Coastal and hydrological ecosystems and Natural disasters.

 

                                               iii.    On Remote Sensing and GIS in Water Resources

è    Developed water quantity forecasting models from satellite infrared data for tanks and reservoirs.

è    Developed Remote Sensing and GIS Integrated Models for Watershed - wise run off estimation.

è    Carried out Remote Sensing studies and demonstrated   the   concept of identifying the areas prone for soil erosion, their functional geo-parameters and  remedial land management models to arrest the silt in  the catchments  of various river basins / regulators in  Peranai,  Kundah, Vaigai catchments etc.,

è    Carried out spectro radiometric surveys over the polluted water bodies and developed linear model between water quality and spectral data

v  This will help in forecasting the water quality directly from satellite data with few additional studies.

è    Conceived new genetic ideas on how ground water target areas can be identified using ARC / INFO GIS

v  This has been successfully demonstrated by conducting holistic studies in Madurai, Dindigul, Theni and Karur districts.

è    Using Remote Sensing and GIS, developed a new technique of identifying ground  water  resources  controlled  by,   top   soil,   fractures,   weathered zone,   slope, land use etc. through GRAM  GIS  for Vellar basin  and through ARC / INFO  GIS for Madurai, Dindigul, Theni  and Karur districts.

è    Developed models on Time transgressive tectonics and ground water systems of Tamilnadu.

è    Carried out indepth studies using Remote Sensing, GIS and applied probaballisitic statistics to develop land management models to improve the efficiency of natural recharge of Western Ghats region of Tamil Nadu.

v  this is a first time study in the  aspects and concepts of natural recharge 

è    Carried  out     Remote   Sensing   based   integrated   terrain   analysis   and demonstrated   certain  newer concepts of   site   selection   and   mechanism detection  for  artificial     recharge  such  as    sites   suitable    for    flooding, furrowing, pitting,   percolation   ponding,    induced    recharging      etc  for, Madurai, Dindigul,Theni,  Karur, Pudukottai  and    parts   of  Tiruchirappalli district of  Central  Tamil Nadu

è    Developed new ideas and models for detecting water bearing  and water barren  fractures  and mechanisms of fracture recharge for different parts of Tamil nadu.

è    Demonstrated newer  concepts  of  Surface and Ground Water budgeting  and detection of water surplus and water deficit water sheds of Ayyar  basin

v  This is again a first time study towards water transfer from watershed to watershed.

è    Developed a first time   GIS based 3D Visualisation models  on  groud water systems.

 

 

                         iv.      On Remote Sensing and GIS for Natural disaster management

 

è   Developed new techniques of Seismotectonic Mapping using Remote Sensing, 3D Visualization of geophysical and groundwater data and integrated geomorphological techniques and thus prepared seismotectonic map for South India.

è   A new method of GIS based slope mapping was developed for Landslide hazard zonation and thus Landslide Hazard Zonation maps were prepared for the Landslides of Southern Part of Nilgiri Mountains

è   Carried out detailed studies on Tsunami Disaster Assessment for Nagapattinam Coast using micro wave data of European satellite, P6 PAN merged data of Indian Remote Sensing Satellite and specially flown digital ortho photo data sets and, GIS data bases and Tsunami disaster atlas was also prepared.

                      In addition, on the basis of Tsunami – Land system interface studies, Tsunami mitigation strategies were also evolved for Tamil Nadu Coast.

è   Flood inundation mapping and harvesting strategies were developed after 2004 and 2005 Floods for Tamil Nadu.

 

                                     v.    Spatial Decision Support Systems for sustainable development

 

è   Developed a First time Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) for Pudukottai District for sustainable development.
