Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) is the flagship programme of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, serves as the National Coordinating Institute for UBA, while the Gandhigram Rural Institute (DTBU), Gandhigram, acts as one of the Regional Coordinating Institutes. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Gandhigram Rural Institute and IIT Delhi on 6th March 2019 and 9th April 2023, formalizing this collaboration. As the Regional Coordinating Institute, GRI, Gandhigram, coordinates UBA programmes across 159 Higher Education Institutions in eleven districts in the southern region of Tamil Nadu (as on 31.8.2024). The Institute receives funding from UBA to coordinate these initiatives. Additionally, GRI, Gandhigram, is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) as a Regional Centre for capacity building of Faculty as Master Trainers for Community-Based Participatory Research. It also serves as a Subject Expert Group member of UBA for Rural Livelihoods.
